RE: Humming noise from fuel priming pump - 1987 M.Y. sedans
As you well know, the 1987 models are equipped with a new type of priming pump which can be identified by an aluminum body (instead of the white plastic body of earlier type).
Although these are improved pumps mechanically and electrically, some may emit more noise than the previous type.
Assure the customer that this condition in no way affects the operation of the vehicle.
We are now launching a program to take care of the noisiest vehicles only, by replacing the fuel tanks with gravity feed tanks without priming pumps (standard equipment on 1988 M.Y. vehicles).
However, due to limited availability of parts, especially at the start of the program, we must ask for your cooperation and patience.
The factory is doing all it can to supply parts as quickly as possible, and consequently has recently doubled the production of the tanks.
Because of the limited quantity, the tanks will be used in the following order of importance:
1) Customer vehicles (most serious cases first)
2) Dealer demonstrators (vehicles to be kept in demo service for a considerable length of time)
3) Dealer and port inventories
What to do:
1) When a customer complains, make sure the fuel pump modifications have been done according to Service Bulletins No. 190 and 208.
2) Listen yourself.
3) If this, in your judgement, entails one of the most serious cases, contact your District Service Manager (DSM), and make an appointment with him for an inspection of the vehicle(s) at your dealership. Give the DSM the vehicle serial number and the customer name.
4) The DSM will, upon arrival, based on measurements with a Sound Level Meter and other criteria, decide if the vehicle in question will receive a new tank at this time or not. If he decides the vehicle should be repaired now, he will issue a Service Department Authorization (SDA).
5) Order a replacement tank P.N. 0015.T6 from PMA Parts Department. An order will only be accepted with an SDA number.
6) As the tanks become available, they will be shipped to you.
7) Upon arrival, replace the tank in accordance with Service Bulletin No. 236, which you will have received.
Should you need further information about this program, please contact your DSM.
We thank you for your cooperation in this important matter.
