Necessary Tools
Only ordinary hand tools are necessary, although a reversing cordless drill/driver with appropriate sockets and screwdriver bits can be handy and save time.
To be able to get to the Phillips head screws holding the tweeters on top of the dashboard, a flexible extension, a ratchet driver or another kind of specialty screwdriver is necessary.
Precautions
Disconnect battery and leave disconnected until installation is completed, radio reconnected (but not installed) and it is time to test the system.
Installation-Procedure
A. PL-1 Front-Tweeters:
- Pop out speaker grilles on top of dashboard using a flatbladed screwdriver.
- Remove original tweeters (if present) held in place by (2) Phillips head screws, and disconnect speaker wire plug.
- Install PL-1 tweeters in reverse order. (If speakers were not installed as original equipment, it may be necessary to fish for the white connector with a flexible claw type pick-up tool.
CAUTION:
There are other similar connectors present in the dash opening. If the plug on PL-1 does not easily mate with the plug you have found, do not force it; it is probably the wrong one.)
- Reinstall speaker grilles (snap in)
FIGURE 1:
B. PL-3 Front Wiring Harness:
- Remove radio from console (if present).
- Remove radio surround plastic housing from console by unscrewing (2) Phillips head screws as indicated in Fig. 1, and prying out the housing.
FIGURE 2:
- Connect PL-3 harness to the vehicle radio harness by matching the colors of the (5) Lego connectors.
NOTE: VEHICLE HARNESS LEGO CONNECTORS WHITE AND YELLOW ARE NOT USED IN THIS INSTALLATION.
- Remove the lower steering column cover held by eight Phillips head screws, in order to clearly see the location of pedals and their linkages, steering mechanism, etc. (Fig. 2).
- Snake long leads marked "connect to right (or left) front amplifier" over to side kickpanels by pushing connectors through daylight openings in upper and outer front corners inside console. Then pull leads through from footwell area.
FIGURE 3:
CAUTION: ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE, ROUTE THE LEADS OVER AND ABOVE THE STEERING COLUMN BRACKET ALONGSIDE EXISTING HARNESSES WHERE THE LEADS WILL NOT INTERFERE WITH ANY MOVING PARTS. (Fig. 3)
- Reinstall lower steering column cover.
- On the RH side on vehicles with Turbo (N9T, N9TE, N9TEA) and V6 (ZN3J) engines, remove the "footrest" cover plate for ignition E.C.U. (and ABS E.C.U. if so equipped) by removing (2) 10 mm hex head screws on top forward edge of plate, and lay the leads under the footrests over to RH side kickpanel.
C. PL-2-Front-Woofers:
- Remove left front kickpanel by pulling loose front door frame moulding (windlacing and weatherstrip), and pulling kickpanels rearwards and then down.
- Remove right front kickpanel in a similar way after having first removed one Phillips head screw from the forward edge of the kickpanel.
- Remove original woofers (if present) from kickpanel, held in place by (4) Phillips head screws and disconnect speaker wire plug.
- Install PL-2 front woofers on the kickpanels using the same (4) screws, with the supplied washers under the screw heads. Orient the speakers in such a way that the wire connectors are facing forward in the vehicle.
FIGURE 4:
D. PL-4 Front Amplifiers:
- Mount PL-4 front amplifiers by slipping their U-clips over the bottom of the cut-out for the speaker magnet in the sheet metal (see Fig. 4).
- The amplifier will now hang out of sight behind the sheet metal.
- Connect front amplifier wire plugs to matching plugs on PL-3 front wiring harness.
NOTE: THE LEADS FROM PL-3 FRONT WIRING HARNESS ARE ROUTED ON TOP OF THE SHEET METAL (BETWEEN SHEET METAL AND PLASTIC KICKPANEL), PROTECTED BY A PLASTIC TUBE. SEE Fig. 4.
- Connect vehicle speaker harness plug to matching amplifier plug
- Connect the remaining two leads from amplifier to the kickpanel speaker terminals.
IMPORTANT: IN ORDER NOT TO BEND/DAMAGE THE SPEAKER TERMINALS, SUPPORT THEN WITH ONE FINGER ON THE BACKSIDE WHEN PUSHING ON THE FEMALE WIRE CONNECTORS.
THE STRIPED LEAD MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE "-" (NEG) TERMINAL (MARKED NEXT TO SPEAKER TERMINAL).
- Reinstall the kickpanels in reverse order of removal, making sure first to snap the front of the left side kickpanel into its locating slot.
E. PL-7 Rear Amplifiers:
- Remove gas tank carpeted trim panel in the trunk.
- Remove original equipment rear speakers and grille assemblies
(if present) by first disconnecting speaker wire plugs. From the trunk side push in the (4) plastic tabs holding the speaker to the rear shelf, and push the speaker up into the passenger compartment.
- Clip the PL-7 rear amplifiers in the speaker openings, facing forward in the vehicle, with the amplifier itself hanging below the rear shelf sheet metal.
F. PL-5 Rear Speaker Systems w/Grilles:
- Install speaker/grille assembly from inside vehicle, making sure the small (1 inch diameter) tweeters are facing the center of the vehicle.
- Ascertain that the woofer magnet is centered in the speaker opening, and that the speaker leads are routed through the opening.
- Align speaker system grille with rear seat backrest.
- Install U-bracket with washer and nut from trunk side, orienting the U-bracket so that it bears against flat surfaces on the rear shelf sheet metal, but does not touch the amplifier.
- Tighten the nut until the woofer magnet stops pulling through the rear shelf opening. Add one quarter turn to the nut.
- Check that speakers are firmly installed by trying to move the speaker grilles on top of rear shelf inside vehicle.
- If loose to the touch, add one quarter turn to nut until firm.
G. PL-6 Rear Wiring Harness:
- Lay harness across top of fuel tank with the 2-pin plug containing the red and black leads on the right side (marked "connect to vehicle harness plug for right rear speaker").
- Connect 9-pin plugs from PL-7 amplifier leads to matching plugs on PL-6 rear wiring harness.
- Connect 6-pin plugs from PL-5 rear speaker system leads to matching plugs on PL-6 rear wiring harness.
- Connect 2-pin plugs on PL-6 rear wiring harness to matching plugs on vehicle rear speaker wiring harness.
- Attach PL-6 rear wiring harness to existing wiring, etc. using wire ties.
H. Reinstalling Radio and Test:
- Connect (7) Lego connectors on PL-3 front wiring harness to (7) Lego connectors on radio harness matching color by color.
IMPORTANT: ENSURE THE COLOR ON THE RADIO AND THE WIRING HARNESS LEGO CONNECTORS ARE THE SAME. AN ERROR IN MATCHING COLORS MAY CAUSE MALFUNCTIONING OR THE RADIO FUSE TO BLOW.
- Reconnect antenna lead.
- Install a 15 A fuse in place of normal 7.5 A radio fuse (Fuse No. F14), P/N 6504.22.
- Reconnect battery.
- Turn ignition switch to accessory position.
- Turn radio on.
- Enter code if Anti-Theft radio.
- Test radio by using volume, fader and tone controls, with FM as signal source.
- If everything works fine, install radio in console, making sure to position the leads, connectors and the filter box on PL-3 front wiring harness towards the inside walls of the console, making room for the radio chassis and a clear path for the locating and support nipple and bracket in the rear of the radio chassis.
- Install outer trim ring to radio faceplate.
- Should system not work, disconnect battery and recheck all connections by starting over from the beginning of these instructions.
- If still not operating correctly, locate defect by "elimination method" (for instance, listening with ear close to each speaker using fader and balance (if present) controls, etc.)
NOTE: WITH PEUGEOT CONCERT SYSTEM INSTALLED, YOU WILL HEAR ONE "POPPING SOUND" IN THE SPEAKERS WHEN IGNITION SWITCH IS TURNED ON FOR THE FIRST TIME (EVEN IF RADIO ITSELF IS NOT TURNED ON).
- This is normal operation of the system.
