Engine Disassemble
1. Place engine on engine stand
2. Drain coolant from block through drain plugs on sides of engine
3. Lock flywheel using J36358 or equivalent.
4. Remove the following:
a. Dipstick and tube
b. Crankshaft pulley nut.
c. Clutch pressure plate and flywheel.
d. Rear sealing plate.
e. Intake and exhaust manifolds.
f. Detonation sensors.
g. Water pump.
5. Remove ignition distributor cover (5) and rotor (6).
Fig. 11 Distributor, rotor, and timing pinion to left camshaft bolt:
6. Remove bolt securing timing pinion to left camshaft (7), Fig. 11.
7. Remove valve covers, timing chain housing and crankshaft key. Measure deflection of (X) of oil pump chain. If it is greater than 2.8 inches, replace chain.
Fig. 12 Oil pump drive chain:
8. Remove oil pump pinion (1) and chain, oil pump driving pinion, spacer, key and oil pump, Fig. 12.
Fig. 13 Right cylinder head front counterweight securing belt and pinion:
9. From right cylinder head, remove front counterweight retaining bolt (3) and pinion (4), Fig. 13.
Fig. 14 Right cylinder head rear counterweight pinion:
10. Loosen rear counterweight pinion (6) bolt (5), Fig. 14.
Fig. 15 Checking chain tensioners:
11. Check extended length of chain tensioners. If dimension (Y) is greater than .380 inch, the drive chains must be replaced. Remove counterweight support (7), Fig. 15, right camshaft pinion and chain, and the left camshaft pinion and chain. If the camshaft pinion and chains are to be reused, they must be marked. The counterweight support is matched to the right cylinder head and cannot be replaced separately.
12. Remove chain tensioners, pads, ``rislan'' filters, crankshaft pinion and key.
13. Remove cylinder head bolts, cylinder head and gaskets.
Fig. 16 Installing sleeve retaining straps:
14. Install sleeve retaining straps .0132AZ, Fig. 16. Identify all of the matched sets of parts for each bank.
Fig. 17 Removing lower crankcase:
15. Turn engine upside down, then remove oil sump, strainer and baffle. Remove lower crankcase (1), Fig. 17, by removing the bearing nuts and bolts (2) holding it to plate .0134E1.
Fig. 18 Removing intermediate bearing caps:
16. Lock front and rear bearing caps using spacers .0134J. Remove intermediate bearing cap cross bolts (3) and numbers 2 and 3 bearing caps, Fig. 18
17. Remove connecting rod, piston and liner assemblies.
18. Remove numbers 1 and 4 bearing caps and lower halves of thrust washers.
19. Remove crankshaft, upper halves of thrust washers and bearings.
