Engine: Service and Repair

NOTE: If vehicle is equipped with manual transmission, transmission must be removed prior to engine removal. Refer to ``Clutch & Manual Transmission Section'' for transmission removal procedure.




1980-87 VANS, WAGONS & FRONT SECTIONS

6-225 (3.7L) Engine

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and remove oil dipstick.
2. Raise and support vehicle, then remove air pump tube from exhaust pipe.
3. Remove exhaust pipe, then the inspection cover from transmission.
4. Drain engine oil and remove engine to transmission strut.
5. Remove engine oil pan attaching screws, then the oil pan. It may be necessary to turn crankshaft to clear front of oil pan.
6. Turn pickup tube upward to protect from damage while removing engine, then remove flexplate to torque converter attaching bolts.
7. Remove lower transmission bellhousing attaching bolts, then the lower right engine mount insulator attaching nut.
8. Lower vehicle and drain cooling system.
9. Remove engine cover, then the carburetor air cleaner and carburetor.
10. On models equipped with A/C, discharge refrigerant from system and disconnect condenser lines.
11. On all models, remove fan shroud, windshield washer and over flow reservoirs, then the front bumper, grille and support brace.
12. Disconnect radiator hoses, then remove radiator and support as an assembly.
13. Remove power steering pump with hoses attached and position aside, then remove air pump.
14. Disconnect throttle linkage, vacuum hoses and all engine electrical connectors.
15. Remove alternator with brackets, fan blade, pulley and all drive belts, then disconnect fuel line from fuel pump.
16. Remove starter attaching bolts, then the starter.
17. Remove distributor cap with spark plug wires attached.
18. Remove upper left engine mount insulator attaching nut.
19. Attach suitable chain to cylinder heads to provide as an engine lifting fixture.
20. Install suitable engine hoist to lifting fixture, then place suitable floor jack under transmission.
21. Remove upper bellhousing attaching bolts.
22. Remove engine from front of vehicle.
23. Reverse procedure to install.



MOTOR HOME

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain cooling system.
2. Disconnect radiator hoses, then remove radiator.
3. Remove engine cover, passenger seat and other fixtures that may limit access to top of engine.
4. Disconnect heater hoses and all engine electrical connectors.
5. Remove air cleaner, fuel lines and carburetor.
6. Install engine lifting adapter to carburetor mounting pad on intake manifold.
7. Disconnect throttle linkage at transmission, then the exhaust pipes at both manifolds.
8. Remove line to fuel pump inlet.
9. Support engine using tool No. C-3487A or equivalent. With engine and transmission slightly raised, disconnect transmission rear mount, speedometer cable and hand brake.
10. Remove front bumper and frame front crossmember.
11. Install suitable engine hoist to lifting fixture, then disconnect front engine mounts from frame.
12. Remove engine from vehicle.
13. Reverse procedure to install.
