Engine - Overheats Under Heavy Load

NO.: 07-03-93

GROUP: Cooling

DATE: Oct. 22, 1993

SUBJECT:
2.5L Engine Overheats When Under Heavy Load

MODELS:

1994 (AS) Caravan/Caravan CV/Voyager

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO SHORT WHEEL BASE VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO 8/07/93 (MDH 080721).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Engine overheating may occur when operating the vehicle with the air conditioning OFF under the following conditions:

- At or near the maximum Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating (GCVWR)

- Ambient temperatures above 80 degrees Fahrenheit

- While climbing a grade

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) allows the cooling fan to run only at low speed unless the Air Conditioning is on, then high speed is possible.

DIAGNOSIS:

Inspect the PCM for one of the following part numbers:

4748016 Federal High Altitude Automatic Transmission
4748017 Federal High Altitude Automatic Transmission, RFI
4748018 Federal and California Automatic Transmission
4748019 Federal and California Automatic Transmission, RFI
4748020 Federal and California Manual Transmission
4748021 Federal and California Manual Transmission, RFI

If one of the above part number PCM's is installed in the vehicle, perform the repair procedure. Otherwise, refer to page 7-4 of the 1994 Town & Country, Caravan and Voyager Service Manual (Publication No. 81-370-4105) for further diagnosis.

PARTS REQUIRED:

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves installing a revised PCM that activates the high speed of the radiator cooling fan when the engine coolant temperature reaches 230 degrees Fahrenheit (110 degrees Celsius). The PCM will change the speed of the radiator cooling fan to low when the engine coolant temperature falls to 219 degrees Fahrenheit (104 degrees Celsius).

1. Using the procedure outlined on page 14-50 in the 1994 Town & Country, Caravan and Voyager Service Manual (Publication No. 81-370-4105), replace the PCM.

2. Type the required information on the authorized modification label as shown, and attach it near the Vehicle Emission Control Information (VECI) label.
