Steering Column - Removal and Installation

WARNING: Servicing the vehicle's SIR-associated systems without first disabling the airbag may result in accidental deployment and personal injury.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove left instrument panel sound insulator.
3. Remove left instrument panel trim pad and steering column trim collar.
4. If steering column is to be serviced, remove steering wheel as follows:
a. Remove steering wheel cover, then horn lead and electrical connectors.
b. Remove retainer and nut.
c. Remove steering wheel using steering gear puller J 1859-03 or equivalent.

CAUTION: To avoid damaging the electronic accessory controls, do not turn steering gear puller bolts more than five turns.

5. Remove steering column to intermediate shaft upper pinch bolt.
6. Remove column bracket support bolts and column bracket support nut.
7. Disconnect shift indicator, then electrical connectors.
8. Disconnect shift cable at actuator, then remove housing holder and steering column assembly.
9. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Tighten bolts/nuts to specifications.
