Stabilizer Bar: Service and Repair

Removal
Remove or disconnect the following:
1. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
2. Tire and wheel.
3. Move steering shaft dust seal for access to pinch bolt.

WARNING: Failure to disconnect intermediate shaft from rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury.

4. Pinch bolt from lower intermediate steering shaft.
5. Loosen all insulator clamp attaching nuts and bolts/screws.
6. Place a jackstand under center of rear frame cross member.
7. Loosen two front frame to body bolts/screws, four turns.
8. Two rear frame to body bolts/screws.
9. Lower the rear of the frame just enough to gain access for stabilizer shaft removal.
10. Insulators and clamps from the frame.
11. Stabilizer bar links from control arms.
12. Pull the stabilizer shaft rearward, swing down, and remove from left side of vehicle.

Installation
Install or connect the following:
1. From the left side of the vehicle, insert stabilizer shaft.
2. Loosely install stabilizer shaft link at control arm.

NOTE: Do not tighten stabilizer link nut at this time. Weight of vehicle must be supported by control arms such that vehicle design trim heights are obtained before tightening link nut.

3. Insulator clamps to frame.
^ Tighten stabilizer shaft bracket bolts/screws to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
4. Raise frame into position while guiding steering shaft onto gear.
5. New frame to body attaching bolts/screws.
6. Remove jackstand.
7. Pinch bolt and tighten.

NOTE: When installing the intermediate shaft make sure the shaft is seated prior to pinch bolt installation. If the pinch bolt is inserted into the coupling before shaft installation, the two mating shafts may disengage.

8. Dust seal onto steering gear.
9. Support weight of vehicle by control arms and tighten stabilizer link nut.
^ Tighten stabilizer shaft link nut to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.).
10. Tire and wheel.
11. Lower vehicle.
