Condition
Some owners may comment on the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) system having inadequate range or the system is intermittent/inoperative in hot afternoon temperatures.
Cause
The range of operation of the RKE system can be affected by several factors, including the position from which it is used. Typically, the range from the rear of the vehicle is less than from the sides, Some vehicles may experience a less than expected operation from certain directions. Also, some vehicles may experience high afternoon temperatures within the instrument panel causing an intermittent/inoperative internal breakdown of the receiver.
Correction
Install a new remote door/rear compartment receiver with foil antenna attached, following the procedure in Section 9K of the Service Manual. The new antenna must be attached as specified in the following repairs for the applicable vehicle.
W Car
Replace the RKE receiver following the procedure in Section 9K of the Service Manual. When installing the new receiver, remove the release tape from the foil antenna, extend toward driver's side and attach to underside of the instrument panel or carrier. Do not twist or attach to any metal objects.
U Van
Replace the RKE receiver following the procedure in Section 9K of the Service Manual. When installing the new receiver, place the upper instrument panel upside down on a protected surface. Using a utility knife or other suitable tool, carefully make two (2) cuts approximately 62 mm (2-1/2 in.) long in the sound deadener to make a loop 125 mm (1 in.) wide (Figure 1). This loop should be approximately 150 mm (6 in.) from the RKE receiver. Extend foil antenna through the loop (Figure 1) and toward the driver's side of the upper instrument panel. Do not twist or attach to any metal objects.
