Drum Brake System: Adjustments

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

- J21177-A Drum to Brake Shoe Clearance Gage

1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
2. Remove the tires and the wheels.
3. Remove the brake drums.
4. Ensure that the stops on both of the parking brake levers are against the edges of the webs on the park brake shoes. If the parking brake cable is holding the stops off the edge of the shoe webs, loosen the parking brake cable adjustment.
5. Use the J21177-A in order to measure the drum inside diameter.
6. Turn the star wheel on the adjusting screw in order to adjust the shoe and lining diameter to 1.27 mm (0.05 in) less than the drum inside diameter at each wheel.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the brake drums.
2. Install the tires and the wheels.
3. Apply and release the brake pedal 30-35 times with a one second pause between each brake application.
4. Inspect the brake drums for brake drag and improper parking brake function.
