Steering Wheel

^ Tools Required:
- J 1859-A Steering Wheel Puller
- J 42578 Steering Wheel Puller Legs





REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Position ignition in the OFF position.
2. Disable SIR system. Refer to System Description in Air Bags and Seat Belts.
3. Inflator restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module.
4. Scribe an alignment mark on steering wheel hub in line with slash mark on steering shaft.
5. Loosen steering wheel shaft nut, positioning it flush with end of shaft.
6. Assemble J 1859-A on steering wheel and pull wheel loose from shaft (Chevrolet and Oldsmobile).
7. Assemble J 1859-A and J 42578 on steering wheel and pull wheel loose from shaft (Pontiac).
8. Steering wheel shaft nut.
9. Steering wheel off steering shaft.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

1. Route SIR connector through steering wheel.
2. Align the scribe mark on steering wheel with slash mark on steering shaft and install steering wheel.
3. Steering wheel shaft nut.
^ Tighten Steering wheel shaft nut to 45 Nm (33 lb ft).

4. Inflator module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module.
5. Enable SIR system. Refer to System Description in Air Bags and Seat Belts.

Inspect
^ Operation of horn and steering wheel.
