Steering Column Replacement

Removal Procedure

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Set the tires in a straight-ahead position. Center the steering wheel.
3. Remove the steering wheel.
4. Remove the trim covers.
5. Remove the SIR coil.




6. Remove the knee bolster screws. Unsnap the knee bolster.
7. Remove the multifunction levers.




8. Disconnect the ignition housing electrical connectors.




9. Disengage the retaining tabs on the park lock cable assembly. Remove the assembly from the ignition module.




10. Remove the lock housing bolts.




11. Remove the lock housing. Slide the bracket from the column.




12. Disconnect the EPS electrical connectors from the EPS controller.





Notice: Rotating steering wheel while it is disconnected from the steering gear may cause damage to SIR coil.

Important: Place a scribe mark on the column to I-shaft connection for reassembly alignment.

13. Remove and discard the column to I-shaft bolt.




14. Remove the lower column pivot bolt.




15. Remove the upper column attachment bolts.
16. Remove the steering column.

Installation Procedure

1. If replacing the steering column, duplicate the scribed mark placed on the old column shaft.




2. Position the steering column into the vehicle.
3. Hand start the steering column pivot bolt.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice.

4. Hand start the steering column mounting bolts.

Tighten the steering column pivot bolt and mounting bolts to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).




5. Slide the intermediate shaft onto the steering column while aligning the previously scribed marks.
6. If the steering column to intermediate shaft was not previously scribed, refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement.




7. Install a new intermediate shaft pinch bolt.

Tighten the bolt to 34 N.m (25 lb ft).




8. Connect the EPS electrical connectors to the EPS controller.
9. Install the lock housing and multifunction lever bracket.




10. Attach the park lock cable to the ignition module.




11. Connect the ignition housing electrical connectors.




12. Snap the knee bolster into position and install fasteners.
13. Install the SIR coil.
14. Install the column trim covers.
15. Install the steering wheel.
16. Connect the negative battery cable.
17. Perform the Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) setup procedure. Refer to Power Steering Control Module Programming and Setup. Programming and Relearning
