Steering Column Jacket Replacement

Removal Procedure

1. Place the vehicle in the straight forward position.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Service and Repair).
3. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement (Steering Wheel Replacement).
4. Remove the column trim covers. Refer to Steering Column Trim Cover Replacement (Steering Column Trim Cover Replacement).
5. Remove the SIR coil. Refer to Steering Wheel Inflatable Restraint Module Coil Replacement (Removal and Replacement).
6. Remove the multifunction turn signal switch housing. Refer to Multifunction Turn Signal Switch Housing Replacement (Multifunction Turn Signal Switch Housing Replacement)
7. Remove the ignition lock cylinder case. Refer to Ignition Lock Cylinder Case Replacement (Ignition Lock Cylinder Case Replacement).
8. Remove the left closeout panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Left Side (Service and Repair).
9. Remove the knee bolster screws. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement (Service and Repair).





Note: Do Not remove the steering column to intermediate steering shaft pinch bolt.

10. Remove the upper column attachment bolts.





Note: Do not strike or bump the exposed shaft.

11. Remove the upper jacket attachment bolts and remove the jacket.

Installation Procedure

1. Clean the lower column shaft splines.
2. Ensure the upper jacket shaft splines are clean and free of debris.
3. Use the supplied grease to apply 2 grams (0.07 ounces) of grease to the column shaft splines.
4. Ensure that the steering wheel alignment notch is in the 12 o'clock position.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).

5. Install the jacket to the column housing and tighten the bolts to 11 Nm (97 lb in).




6. Install the upper column attachment bolts and tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb ft).
7. Install the left closeout panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Left Side (Service and Repair).
8. Install the knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement (Service and Repair).
9. Install the ignition lock cylinder case. Refer to Ignition Lock Cylinder Case Replacement (Ignition Lock Cylinder Case Replacement).
10. Install the multifunction turn signal switch housing. Refer to Multifunction Turn Signal Switch Housing Replacement (Multifunction Turn Signal Switch Housing Replacement)
11. Install the SIR coil. Refer to Steering Wheel Inflatable Restraint Module Coil Replacement (Removal and Replacement).
12. Install the column trim covers. Refer to Steering Column Trim Cover Replacement (Steering Column Trim Cover Replacement).
13. Install the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement (Steering Wheel Replacement).
14. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Service and Repair).
15. Road test the vehicle to verify steering operation.
