Steering Gear Replacement (Hydraulic Power Steering)

Removal Procedure

1. Disconnect the rack and pinion outer tie rods from the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement (Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement).
2. Remove the intermediate steering shaft lower bolt. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement (Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement).
3. Place drain pans under the vehicle as needed.




4. Remove the transaxle mount bolt (1).




5. Remove the transaxle mount bolts (1) and position the transaxle mount aside.




6. Disconnect the power steering gear inlet hose (2) and the power steering cooler hose (1) from the power steering gear.




7. If equipped, remove the power steering gear hoses bracket bolt (1).
8. If equipped, unclip the power steering gear hose from the bracket.




9. Remove the power steering gear bolts (1).
10. Remove the power steering gear through the left wheel house area.
11. Transfer any parts as needed.

Installation Procedure

1. Position the power steering gear into the vehicle through the left wheel house area.





Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).

2. Install the power steering gear bolts (1) and tighten to 110 Nm (81 lb ft).




3. If equipped, install the power steering gear hoses bracket bolt (1) and tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb in).
4. If equipped, clip the power steering gear hose to the bracket.




5. Connect the power steering gear inlet hose (2) and the power steering fluid cooler hose (1) to the power steering gear.
Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb ft).




6. Install the transaxle mount and transaxle mount bolts (1) and tighten to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).




7. Install the transaxle mount bolt (1) and tighten to 110 Nm (81 lb ft).
8. Clean any excess fluid from the vehicle and remove the drain pans.
9. Install the intermediate steering shaft lower bolt. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement (Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement).
10. Connect the rack and pinion outer tie rods to the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement (Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement).
11. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding (Service and Repair).
12. Adjust the front toe. Refer to Wheel Alignment - Steering Wheel Angle and/or Front Toe Adjustment (Service and Repair).
