Brake Shoes & Linings

On all models except Chevrolet Corvette, the brake shoe and lining assemblies should be replaced if the lining is worn to within 1/32 inch of rivet heads (riveted linings) or brake shoe (bonded linings). On Chevrolet Corvette, the brake shoe and lining assemblies should be replaced when the lining is the approximate thickness of the brake shoe. On Pontiac Fiero rear brake shoes, note that a 1/10 inch thick thermal insulation is included between the brake pad friction material and shoe, and that this thickness should not be considered as usable lining material. It is recommended that brake linings always be replaced as axle sets. Do not replace individual pads or replace pads on one wheel of an axle set alone, as braking performance will be adversely affected.
If a visual inspection does not adequately determine the condition of the linings, the brake shoe and lining assemblies should be removed and inspected. If shoes do not require replacement, reinstall them in their original positions. Brake shoes and linings should also be replaced if cracked or damaged.
