Body - Aftermarket Equipment, Sheet Metal Corrosion

Number 83-I-27 Section 2 Date 01/83
Subject: SHEET METAL CORROSION CAUSED BY INSTALLATION OF "ADD-ON" EQUIPMENT
Whenever items such as body side moldings, dealer name plates, mud/splash guards, etc., are added to a vehicle after it has been manufactured which require piercing of sheet metal panels, a possibility exists for sheet metal corrosion to occur in areas where the metal has been pierced, as well as other areas caused by water entry at the point of piercing.

The Pontiac Perforation From Corrosion Limited Warranty does not cover corrosion due to "vehicle alteration"; therefore, the reliability and performance of non-GM "add-on" equipment installations must become the responsibility of the installer (dealer or vehicle owner). For this reason, you should evaluate the procedures used in your dealership (and outside sublet shops) to assure that proper steps are being taken to provide sheet metal corrosion protection which could be affected by the installation of such "add-on" equipment.
