M/T - Difficult to Select Reverse Gear

Number 83-I-152A Section 7 Date 2/84

Subject: DIFFICULT TO SELECT REVERSE GEAR - 1983 2000 MODELS WITH 4-SPEED MANUAL TRANSAXLE

Reverse Inhibit Mechanism:

The reverse inhibit mechanism (Part Number 14051043) on some transmission control assemblies (shifters) in 1983 2000 vehicles equipped with the M19, 4-speed manual transaxle may not release when the operator pulls upward on the lift trigger. When this occurs, the control assembly is unable to enter the reverse gate. Difficulty to release the reverse inhibit mechanism may stem from breakage (usually at colder temperature) of plastic release parts such as the bellcrank or the nylon pull strap (see illustration).

On vehicles where inspection indicates the control assembly condition described, replace the unit's reverse inhibitor release parts mounted on the shift handle per the instruction sheet contained in service kit (Part Number 14081101). The kit, labeled Trigger and Pull Rod Unit-Transmission Control, is packaged to include the following:

^ Lift Trigger
^ Pull Strap
^ Bellcrank
^ Pawl Rod Spring
^ Boot Retainer
^ Instruction Sheet

Following repair, verify the proper operation of the control assembly by checking for reverse engagement and a smooth shift into each gear..
