Forward Clutch Housing

1. Remove forward and direct washer (617), then place forward clutch assembly (619) downward with turbine shaft through hole in work bench, see image.

2. Remove forward clutch retainer snap ring, then the backing plate.

3. Remove forward clutch plates, then the wave plate.

4. Install tool Nos. J25O18, J-25024 and J23327-1, then compress retainer and spring assembly (625).

5. Remove snap ring (626), forward clutch spring assembly, then the forward clutch piston assembly with apply ring.

6. Remove inner piston seals. Do not remove clutch apply ring from piston unless piston or apply ring requires replacement.

7. Inspect 2 turbine shaft seal rings (616) and their ring grooves for damaged, burrs or cuts. Ensure seals fit freely into ring grooves.

8. Inspect forward clutch to direct clutch thrust washer for damage.

9. Check clutch plates for wear, burning, flaking, distortion or damage and replace as necessary.

10. Check backing plate for scratches or damage, then the retainer and spring assembly and replace as necessary.

11. Check forward clutch piston and clutch apply ring for cracks and damage.

12. Check forward clutch housing for open oil passages, then the lube feed passages for blockage.

13. Assemble clutch apply ring onto piston, then new inner and outer seals onto piston.

14. Install forward clutch piston into forward clutch housing, then insert retainer and spring assembly.

15. Compress retainer assembly as previously described, then install snap ring.

16. Install clutch plate starting with waved plate, then alternating steel and composition plates.

17. Install backing plate, chamfered side up, then insert snap ring (231).

18. Install turbine shaft seal rings, if removed.
