Subject: DOOR GLASS DOES NOT SEAL PROPERLY - BLOW OUT CLIP SERVICE PROCEDURE

Affected: 1983 - 1990 SUNBIRD CONVERTIBLE MODELS
(1986 - 1989)
To replace composite (steel and plastic) blow out clip when door window closes with glass resting on outboard edge of clip and not sealing at roof rail seal or quarter window sash seal and also causing misalignment of door glass to quarter window.
(1990 and prior to 1986)
For vehicles without blow out clip. Install if door glass pulls away from seals during high speed travel or turbulent winds, causing intermittent air leaks and wind noise around door glass.
Also, to repair broken or inoperative plastic blow out clip.

REMOVE CENTER RAIL SEAL RETAINER: Figure 1
Remove screw from seal hold down tab. Partially open folding top to allow access to seal retainer screws and remove. Slowly remove center seal retainer from roof rail, being careful not to damage the foam tape sealer on top edge of retainer. A thin scraper may help in this process.
REMOVE BLOWOUT CLIP FROM RETAINER: (If Present) Figure 1
For composite blow out clip: Pinch seal and pull out of retainer to expose screw and remove screw and clip. For plastic clip: Remove screw from back of clip and pull off.
INSTALL PLASTIC CLIP TO RETAINER: Figure 2
Position plastic blow out clip on outside edge of new seal retainer at notch location. Fasten clip by driving screw through back of clip into seal retainer. Reassemble rubber seal to seal retainer using weatherstrip adhesive.
CONNECT SEAL RETAINER TO ROOF RAIL: Figure 1
Place a small amount of sealant/adhesive to top of retainer. Install retainer to roof rail being sure foam tape is compressed and sealed to roof rail after screws are tightened.
INSPECT FOR PROPER OPERATION: Figure 2
Check # 1
With door window in full-up position, close door completely several times. Top of window glass should go behind clip (between clip and rubber seal) every time. If not, then adjust door glass rear up-stop block as described below to slightly lower top of glass so that it will snap under and behind clip. Do not over adjust or glass will not seat to top rail seals.
Check # 2
Also, with door fully closed the window should open then close full-up with window glass inside of clip as above. If not, then adjust door glass rear up-stop channel as described below to move top of window slightly inboard.

ADJUST REAR UP-STOP BLOCK - ONLY IF CHECK # 1 FAILS: Figure 3
Remove:
- Arm Rest Assembly
- Door Trim Panel
- Water Deflector (Upper rear corner)
Lower window slightly so it does not engage rear up-stop (132). Loosen rear up-stop block bolt, and lower block slightly. DO NOT OVER ADJUST. Tighten Up-stop block bolt. Repeat Inspection Check # 1 for proper operation. Readjust if necessary. Replace items previously removed.
ADJUST REAR UP-STOP CAM - ONLY IF CHECK # 2 FAILS: Figure 3
Remove:
- Arm Rest Assembly
- Door Trim Panel
- Water Deflector (Upper rear corner)
Mark location of adjustment bolt for rear up-stop cam with scribe, or other method. Loosen rear up-stop cam adjustment bolt. Move rear cam slightly outboard, being careful not to effect fore/after adjustment. Tighten adjusting bolt and repeat Inspection Check # 2. Re-adjust if necessary. Replace items previously removed.
