Drive Axle - Boot Protectors

Number 84-7-4 Date 11/83
Subject: DRIVE AXLE BOOT PROTECTORS - PHOENIX, 6000 AND 2000 MODELS

To prevent accidental damage to the drive axle boots when doing service work on a vehicle in the area of the drive axle, it is recommended that Protectors J-28712 be installed on the boots. (Refer to illustration.) It is also important that these boot protectors be used when drive axle assembly is removed from a vehicle (transmission removal, etc.).

Beside protecting the boot, the protectors aid in preventing over-extension when removing a drive axle.. If a drive axle joint is over-extended, internal parts may fall out and there is a potential for dirt entering joint which will result in failure of the axle.

Always remember to remove the protectors after the service work is completed.
