Subject: DECELERATION VALVE STUCK CLOSED


VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1984 PONTIAC 6000 EQUIPPED WITH 2.8L V-6 ENGINE (RPO LE2 and LH7) FEDERAL OR CALIFORNIA EMISSION SYSTEMS

CONDITION INVOLVED

General Motors has determined that certain 1984 Pontiac 6000 vehicles equipped with 2.8L V-6 engines (RPO LE2 and LH7) and Federal or California emission systems may be emitting pollutants in excess of Federal or California emission standards.

The cause has been identified as a sticking deceleration valve which may not open, resulting in possible failure to meet HC emissions.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

Only certain 1984 Pontiac 6000 vehicles equipped with 2.8L V-6 engines (RPO LE2 and LH7) and Federal or California emission systems within the following vehicle parameters:

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY

To correct this condition on vehicles involved, dealers will inspect the deceleration valve, and replace if necessary, as directed in the PART I and PART II - SERVICE PROCEDURE section of this bulletin (page 2).

Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to the owner, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your vehicle inventory, or it is in your dealership for service in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before reselling or releasing the vehicle.
Owners of vehicles recently sold from your vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the dealer, and arrangements made to make the required modification according to instructions contained in this bulletin.

OWNER NOTIFICATION Owners of vehicles involved in this campaign, as records available to Pontiac Motor Division indicate, will be notified by Pontiac Motor Division (see copy of owner letter included with this bulletin).

Involved vehicles have been identified by Vehicle Identification Number computer listings. Computer listings contain the complete vehicle identification number, owner name and address data, and are furnished to the involved dealers with the campaign bulletin. Owner name and address data furnished will enable dealers to follow-up with owners involved in this campaign.

These computer listings may contain owner names and addresses obtained from State Motor Vehicle Registration records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose is a violation of the law in several states. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this listing for the follow-up necessary to complete this campaign.
