M/T Shift Cable - Adjustment Procedure

Subject: TRANSMISSION CABLE ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE- 1984 FIERO EQUIPPED WITH FOUR-SPEED TRANSMISSION

TRANSMISSION CONTROL ASSEMBLY:




The following procedure and illustration supersedes the cable adjustment procedure found in the Fiero Service Manual (Bound and Loose-Leaf).

1. Disconnect negative (-) battery cable.

2. Place transaxle in first gear.

3. Loosen shift cable attaching nuts (E) at transaxle levers (D) and (F). View B.

4. Remove console trim plate as required for access to shifter.

5. With shifter lever in first gear position (pulled to left and held against stop), insert alignment pins F and G as shown in view C (5/32" or No. 22 drill bit may be used).

6. Remove lash from transaxle by rotating lever (D) in direction of arrow while tightening nut (E) View A. Levers (D) and (F) should be kept from moving during this process. Similarly, tighten nut (E) on lever (F). (No biasing required.) Again levers (D) and (F) must remain stationary. Nut (E) on levers (D) and
(F) tightened to 27 N-m (20 ft.lbs.).

7. Ensure reverse inhibit cam is against roller and align if necessary.

8. Remove alignment pins F and G at shifter assembly.

9. Replace console trim plate.

10. Re-connect negative battery cable.

While cycling shifter from 1 to 2 and 2 to 1, cable B should not move.
