Neutral Safety Switch: Service and Repair


Some models use a combination neutral start and back-up light switch, while others use a separate back-up light switch. Both switches are serviced in the following manner.

SELF-ADJUSTING TYPE
1. Place gear selector in ``Neutral.''
2. Gently rock switch out of steering column.
3. Disconnect wiring connectors. Connect wiring connectors to new switch.
4. Align switch actuator with hole in shift tube, Fig. 3.
5. Position connector side of switch into lower jacket cut out.
6. Push down front of switch, ensuring switch tangs snap into holes in steering column jacket.
7. Adjust switch by placing gear selector in ``Park'' position. Switch main housing and housing back should ratchet, providing proper adjustment.

Firebird
1. Remove floor console cover.
2. Disconnect wire connectors from back-up lamp/neutral start switch.
3. Position gear shift lever into Neutral position.
4. Remove two screws securing neutral starter switch, then remove switch.
5. Ensure gear shift lever is in Neutral position before installing switch.
6. Install new switch in position on gear shift lever. Ensure pin on gear shift lever is in slot of switch. Tighten switch and torque to 14---19 inch lbs., Fig. 6.
7. Move gear shift lever out of Neutral position to break plastic shear pin.
8. Connect electrical connectors to switch. Apply parking brake and start vehicle. Ensure vehicle starts only in Park or Neutral positions.
9. Turn ignition off and install floor console cover.
