Door Lock Knob - Falls Off of Lock Rod

Number 84-10-21 Date 7/84

Subject: DOOR INSIDE LOCKING KNOB FALLING OFF THE DOOR INSIDE LOCKING ROD - 1982-84 6000, FIREBIRD, 2000, FIERO, AND 1980-84 PHOENIX CARS

FIGURE 1 - LOCKING ROD:

This condition has three possible causes (see Figure 1).

1. The hole in the back side of the locking knob that receives the end of the locking rod has a mold that is too shallow. Therefore, the locking rod does not seat properly into the locking tongs.

2. The end of the locking rod is too long creating the same condition as a shallow hole.

3. The locking tongs on the locking knob are not molded properly and, therefore do not hold the locking rod.

To correct the condition due to (1) the shallow hole or (2) the long ended locking rod, remove material from the end of the rod to bring the specified dimension in Figure 1 to 3/8".

To correct the condition due to (1) the shallow hole or (3) improperly molded locking tongs, replace the knob with a new one, Part Number 20380980 (bright) or 20380981 (black).
