Clutch: Testing and Inspection

NOTE: Before removing release mechanism for service, verify that a malfunction exists as follows:

INSPECTION
1. Remove clutch housing dust shield and note position of slave cylinder plunger.

2. Depress clutch pedal fully and measure slave cylinder plunger travel.

3. If plunger moves release lever a minimum of 0.57 inch for 1984-87 models and 1988 V8 engine models or 0.43 inch for 19886 engine models, check clutch disc, pressure plate, release fork and bearing for damage and repair as needed.

4. If plunger does not move lever at least the minimum specified, check fluid level in clutch master cylinder with pedal depressed, and fill to step in reservoir.

CAUTION: Do not overfill. Upper portion of reservoir must be open to accept fluid displaced in slave cylinder due to clutch wear.

5. Recheck plunger travel and check hydraulic components for leaks.

6. If plunger travel is still less than the minimum specified, or it excessive leakage is noted, replace hydraulic system as an assembly.
