Charging System - Excessive Battery Drain At Idle
Number 84-8-16 Date 8/84Subject: EXCESSIVE BATTERY DRAIN AT IDLE ON 5.7L LF9 DIESEL ENGINES AND UD1 GAGE OPTION 1984 PARISIENNE
A condition of excessive battery drain with the engine idling and accessory loads (lights, defog, etc.) on may be caused by a noncharging alternator.
A limited number of early 1984 model vehicles may have been built with an incorrect "oil and check engine" light filter installed in the cluster instead of the correct "oil and battery" filter. These were only in vehicles equipped with the LF9 diesel engine and the UD1 gage option.
The bulb located in the "battery" cavity may have been removed in assembly. This bulb is part of the alternator field exciter circuit and its absence results in a no alternator output condition at engine speeds of less than approximately 2700 RPM..
INSTRUMENT PANEL:
To repair a subject vehicle:
1. Remove the instrument panel to gain access to the "check engine" light filter.
2. Remove "oil and check engine" filter, P/N 25053790 and replace with an "oil and gen" light filter, P/N 25021489.
3. Install a new lamp and socket assembly, P/N 25015169.
4. Replace instrument panel.
