A/T - Whining Noise and Slow Engagement

Subject: WHINING NOISE AND SLOW ENGAGEMENT - ALL 1000 MODELS EQUIPPED WITH A THM 180C AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

The vehicles referenced may exhibit the following condition:

Whining noise which increases with engine R.P.M. in all ranges and slow or slipping engagement. The whining noise is similar to noise caused from the steering wheel being turned to its maximum travel.

If the above condition exists check the transmission oil line pressure. (Refer to the service manual for procedure.) If the line pressure is low refer to the following service procedure.

Service Procedure:

1. Remove the oil filter and visually inspect for restriction.

2. If the oil filter is restricted remove the transmission from vehicle, and remove the pump.

3. After removing the pump inspect the selective end-play washer for wear especially on the inside diameter of the washer. If the washer is worn replacement is necessary.

4. Remove any burrs that may be present around the lube hole on the Pump Tower (Figure 1).

5. Inspect washer thrust surface for damage (Figure 1). Remove any high spot that may be present by stoning the thrust surface.

6. Thoroughly wash the Pump Body with solvent before reassembly.

7. Select the correct end-play washer (refer to the service manual for this procedure) and assemble pump to the transmission, replace oil screen and install transmission into vehicle.
