This automatic transaxle, is designed for use as a transverse mounted front wheel drive unit. It consists primarily of a 3 element torque converter, a compound planetary gear set and dual sprocket and drive link assembly.

A differential and final drive gear set is also used in the transaxle case. Three multiple disc clutches, a roller clutch and a band provide the friction elements required to obtain the desired functions of the planetary gear set. Hydraulic pressure required to operate the friction elements and automatic controls is provided by a vane type oil pump.

The torque converter serves two basic functions. It acts as a fluid coupling to smoothly connect engine power through oil to the transmission gear train, and it multiplies the torque for twisting effort from the engine when additional power is desired.





The final drive assembly is a planetary gear set consisting of a final drive internal gear which is splined to the transmission case, a final drive sun gear which is splined to the final drive sun gear shaft, and the final drive planet pinions which are located in the differential and final drive carrier assembly.

The gear set operates in reduction at all times. Power through the final drive sun gear shaft drives the sun gear in a clockwise direction which drives the planet pinions in a counterclockwise direction. Since the final drive internal gear is 5 lined to the case and will not rotate, the differential and final drive carrier will rotate in a clockwise direction.

The gear ratio of about 2.84:1 performs the same function as the ring and pinion gears in a conventional rear axle unit. It is the fixed final or axle ratio that is required to match the engine power and drive train to the vehicle requirements in all normal operating conditions.
