Number 86-6(Gasoline)-28A Date 6/86
Subject: NEW OIL PAN GASKET

1982 THRU 1986 2000 SUNBIRD VEHICLES WITH LH8/LA5 1.8L OHC ENGINE (VIN CODE 0 AND J)
A new one piece oil pan gasket has been released into production on 1986 1/2 1.8L OHC engines. The new gasket has steel inserts at the bolt holes to provide improved torque retention and uniform gasket compression. In addition, the new gasket has a semi-cured neoprene coating to develop strong adhesion to the cylinder case and oil pan flange.

In addition to the new gasket, new longer oil pan screws have been released and must be used with the new gasket. New torque limit of 8-10 N-m (7-8 ft.lbs.) must be applied with the new oil pan screws.

Before replacing the oil pan gasket, care should be taken in determining the exact source of the engine oil leak. All new 1.8L OHC engines have ultraviolet dye added to the engine oil to facilitate oil leak diagnosis. This dye mixes with the engine oil and causes it to take on a yellowish glow under a blacklight. Tracer dye is available for higher mileage vehicles and its use is recommended.

If the oil pan gasket has been identified as the source of the leak, routine Shop Manual procedure will apply.

Use applicable labor operation and labor time for this operation.
