Suspension - Front Strut Shield Pop or Rub Noise

Number 86-3-16 Date 2/87
Subject: FRONT STRUT SHIELD "POP" OR RUB NOISE

1985-86 GRAND AM MODELS 1982-86 SUNBIRD MODELS

Front Strut:

A pop, rub, or racheting noise may be experienced on some Grand Am or Sunbird models. This condition may be caused by the front strut shield convolutes contacting the strut jounce plate during suspension movement. Refer to the Illustration.

The 1987 strut shield is more pliable and may be installed on prior year models to repair this condition. The new shield is available for 1985-87 Grand Am and 1982-87 Sunbird models as a bumper and shield assembly, part number 22533136.

Notice: Strut shield noise should not be mistaken for a louder "squawk" noise that may occur from the front stabilizer bar bushings.. Refer to Dealer Service Bulletin 86-3-10.
