1. Check that alignment mark on injection pump flange is aligned with alignment mark on front plate.
2. Rotate crankshaft until timing mark on pulley aligns with pointer, bringing cylinder No. 1 to TDC on compression stroke, Fig. 12. The damper pulley has eleven notched lines as shown in Fig. 12. Four lines on one side, seven elsewhere. The four lines are intended for service use while the other seven are for factory use only.
3. Remove upper dust cover, check injection pump belt tension and timing marks alignment. See Timing Belt, Replace.
4. Remove the cam cover and rear plug, ensure that the fixing plate fits smoothly into the camshaft rear slit, then remove the fixing plate. See Timing Belt, Replace.
5. Disconnect the injection pipe from the injection pump, remove distributor head screw and gasket, install static timing gauge J-29763, Fig. 20. Set the lift approximately 0.040 inch (1 mm) from the plunger.
6. Bring the No. 1 piston to a point 45°---60° BTDC by turning the crankshaft, then set dial indicator to zero. Turn crankshaft slightly in both directions, ensuring gauge indication is stable.
7. Turn crankshaft in normal direction of rotation until the 18° mark on the damper is aligned with the timing pointer, Fig. 12. Note reading of dial indicator, if reading is not 0.020 inch (0.5 mm), hold crankshaft at 18° and loosen the two nuts on the injection pump flange, Fig. 21. Move pump until reading on dial indicator is 0.020 inch (0.5 mm), then tighten nuts.
