Assemble

1. Install new selector shaft seal in case with grooved end facing toward outside of case. Install selector shaft from outside of case and install spring pin into case to secure shaft.

2. Guide selector lever over shaft and secure with locknut, then insert parking pawl actuator rod from front of case and through hole in case at rear. Install parking pawl actuator rod snap ring.

3. Place transmission case so front is facing upward.

4. Check low band for wear or damage. Replace if necessary. Install band in case and locate band onto anchor pins in case, see image.

5. Place reaction sun gear-to-case needle bearing into case. Secure bearing with petroleum jelly to center bearing over case bushing, see image.

6. Install reaction sun gear-and-drum into band with sun gear facing upward, then the output shaft-to-output sun gear needle bearing onto sun gear, and secure with petroleum jelly.

7. Install sun gear-to-output shaft thrust washer, then needle bearing into planetary carrier and secure with petroleum jelly.

8. Install output shaft and planetary carrier assembly into case to spline with reaction sun gear, see image.

9. With second clutch assembly on the bench, align second clutch drive plates in second clutch drum. Install third clutch drum and input shaft assembly through top of second clutch drum, seating third clutch drum splines into second clutch plate splines, see image.

10. Lower second and third clutch assemblies into case, indexing ring gear in second clutch drum with long planetary pinion gear teeth, see image.

11. Inspect reverse clutch plates for wear or damage. Replace as necessary. Install aluminum pressure plate into case with flat side facing upward making sure that the lug on the plate engages with one of the narrow notches in the case. Lubricate with automatic transmission fluid and install clutch plates starting with a steel plate then alternating with composition plate and steel plate until all are installed. Install reverse clutch cushion plate (wave washer) into case making sure that the three lugs are engaged into narrow notches in case.

12. Determine selective washer thickness (oil pump hub-to-second clutch thrust washer) using tool J-23085, see image. Mount tool on case flange and against input shaft, see image. Loosen thumb screw to allow inner shaft to drop onto second clutch drum. Tighten thumb screw and remove tool from transmission. Compare the thickness of the selective washer removed from the transmission to the protruding shaft of the tool. The selective washer used in reassembly should be the thickest washer available without exceeding the dimension of the shaft protruding from the tool. The dimension of selected washer must be equal to or slightly less than the inner shaft length to obtain the correct endplay of .14 to .031 inch (.36 to .79 mm).

13. Install a new pump flange gasket and place the proper selective thrust washer, determined, on the oil pump shaft and retain with petroleum jelly.

14. Install two guide pins in case and lower the converter housing and oil pump into case. Install and torque retaining bolts to 22-26 ft. lbs. Turn input shaft by hand to check for correct assembly.

15. Turn transmission so bottom of case faces upward. Lubricate governor hub and seals with automatic transmission fluid and install into rear of case. Install snap ring on output shaft, place a new gasket on governor body onto hub. Torque bolts to 6-7 ft. lbs. The two governor valves should move freely after governor body bolts are torqued.

16. Place speedometer drive gear retaining clip on output shaft and slide speedometer gear into place while depressing clip.

17. Install extension housing with new gasket making sure to align parking pawl shaft into housing. Install speedometer driven gear into housing.

18. Check detent valve sleeve seal for wear and replace, if necessary. Install detent valve, sleeve, spring and spring seat into case bore, depress valve spring and install retaining spring pin. Detent valve sleeve must be installed with slots facing oil pan and spring pin must engage the proper groove in the sleeve and not into an oil passage slot in the sleeve.

19. Install modulator valve and sleeve into case with small end of valve first. Install new O-ring on modulator and install plunger and modulator into case.

20. Install servo apply rod, spring and piston into case using automatic transmission fluid to lubricate seal.

21. Install compressor J-23075, compress servo piston until seated and install retaining ring, see image. To avoid damaging piston seal, tap lightly on piston while installing into case.

22. Loosen servo adjusting bolt locknut and bolt. Adjust servo apply rod by torquing adjusting bolt to 40 in. lbs. making sure locknut remains loose, then loosen adjusting bolt five (5) turns and tighten locknut, see image.

23. Install steel balls in oil passages in case, see first image. Place new transfer plate-to-case gasket on case and install guide pins in case for correct alignment of transfer plate and valve body, see second image. Install bolts holding transfer plate to valve body. Lubricate with automatic transmission fluid and install manual valve into valve body. Install long side of manual link pin "A" into valve and short end of link pin into selector lever, then guide valve body and transfer plate over guide pins, see third image.

24. Install selector lever roller spring and retainer and torque to 13-15 ft lbs. Install valve body bolts and torque to 13-15 ft lbs. starting from the center of valve body and working outward.

25. Install reinforcement plate and torque bolts to 13-15 ft lbs. Install oil strainer and gasket, torque bolts to 13-15 ft lbs.

26. Install governor pressure switch, if applicable, and torque to 7 ft lbs.
