Assembly
1. Install selector arm plates and nylon inserts in shift forks, then coat edges of shift rail plug with suitable sealer and install plug, see accompanying figure.
2. Lubricate shift rail and bores and insert shift rail in cover so that end of rail is flush with inside edge of cover.
3. Position first-second shift fork (larger of two forks) in cover with offset facing rear of cover and push shift rail through fork.
4. Position selector arm and "C" shaped interlock plate in cover and insert shift rail in cover with widest part of interlock plate facing away from cover and selector arm roll pin hole facing downward and toward rear of cover.
5. Position third-fourth shift fork in cover with offset facing rear of cover. Third-Fourth shift fork selector arm plate must be positioned under first-second shift fork selector arm plate.
6. Insert shift rail through third-fourth shift fork and into front shift rail bore in cover, then turn shift rail until selector arm plate at forward end of rail faces away from, but is parallel to cover.
7. Align roll pin holes in selector arm and shift rail, then install roll pin flush with surface of selector arm to prevent contact between pin and selector arm plates during shifts.
8. Install O-ring in groove of shift rail oil seal and install shift rail oil seal as follows:
a. Install tool J-26628-2 over threaded end of shift rail.
b. Lubricate lip of oil seal and slide seal over tool and onto shift rail.
c. Using tool J-26628-1 or equivalent, seat oil seal in transmission cover.
