Removal and Installation

1. Disconnect battery ground cable from transaxle and attach to upper radiator hose with wire or tape.
2. Disconnect electrical connector from horn, then remove horn attaching bolt.
3. Remove air cleaner assembly.
4. Disconnect clutch cable as follows:
a. Support clutch pedal upward against bumper stop to release pawl from quadrant.
b. Disconnect cable from clutch release lever on transaxle. Use care to prevent cable from snapping toward rear of vehicle.
c. Disconnect cable from quadrant. Lift locking pawl away from quadrant, then slide cable out on right side.
d. Disconnect 2 upper nuts on engine side of cowl, holding cable retainer to upper studs.
e. Disconnect cable from bracket on transaxle.
5. On models with V6 engine, disconnect fuel lines and fuel line clamps from clutch cable bracket.
6. Remove clutch cable bracket from transaxle.
7. On models with V6 engine, remove exhaust crossover pipe.
8. On all models, remove retaining clips and washers from transaxle shift linkage at transaxle.
9. Remove shift cable to mounting boss retaining clips from transaxle case.
10. Disconnect speedometer cable from transaxle.
11. Remove 5 upper engine to transaxle attaching bolts.
12. Install engine support fixture, Fig. 13.
13. Raise and support vehicle.
14. Drain fluid from transaxle.
15. Install suitable drive axle boot seal protectors on both inner and outer seals.
16. Remove left front wheel assembly.
17. Remove left side cradle and crossmember assembly as follows:
a. Position jack under engine to act as a support during removal and installation.
b. Disconnect front ball joint.
c. Disconnect front stabilizer bar from control arm.
d. Remove front stabilizer bar plate and bushing from side member.
e. Disconnect engine and transaxle mount from left side member.
f. Remove side member to crossmember attaching bolts.
g. Remove 2 left side body mount bolts.
h. Remove left side and crossmember assembly.
18. Disconnect drive axles from transaxle, then swing left side drive axle outward from transaxle. Right side drive axle can be removed as transaxle is being removed from vehicle.
19. Remove flywheel and starter motor shield attaching bolts.
20. Securely attach transaxle case to jack for removal.
21. Remove remaining transaxle to engine attaching bolt.
22. Remove transaxle by sliding to left side away from engine and carefully lowering assembly from vehicle.
23. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. When installing transaxle, position right side drive axle shaft into its bore, as driveshaft cannot be installed after transaxle is attached to engine.
b. After transaxle is attached to engine, swing cradle into position and immediately install cradle to body attaching bolts.
