1986 FIERO GT MODELS
This bulletin contains the possible causes and repair procedures of squeaks and rattles on the 1986 Fiero GT. Many squeaks and/or rattles can be caused by loose or stripped fasteners. Before any attempt is made to repair a squeak or rattle, proper diagnosis should be made to determine the cause of the customer complaint.
CONDITION:
Creak and/or squeak near upper front and rear roof panel when driving up incline or over bumps.
CAUSE:
The drip rail molding bridging two independent panels, the roof and quarter, may create a squeaking and/or creak noise.. Vehicles built after VIN GP278695 have an isolating material between the body panels and drip rail which eliminates the noise.
CORRECTION:
FIGURE 1 - DRIP RAIL MOULDING:
To repair this condition, remove the drip rail molding (refer to Section 10, 8-5 Body Section of the Service Manual). Apply a 1/8" bead of 3M Flexiclear P/N #08405 (available at local 3M suppliers) in the channel of the drip rail molding, reinstall drip rail molding (refer to Figure 1).
CONDITION:
Creak noise in right rear of lock pillar area when driving over bumps. This condition is only on vehicles built before VIN GP277237.
CAUSE:
Interference between the rear defogger ground screw and the inner body reinforcement panel.
CORRECTION:
FIGURE 2 - REAR DEFOGGER GROUND SCREW:
Relocate the rear defogger ground screw upward 5 mm (refer to Figure 2).
CONDITION:
Etching or cracking noise at top of the quarter window.
CAUSE:
Top edge of the quarter glass rubbing against the door weatherstrip retainer.
CORRECTION:
FIGURE 3 - DOOR WEATHERSTRIP RETAINER:
Separate top edge of quarter glass from door weatherstrip retainer by relocating the retainer very slightly inward (refer to Figure 3).
CONDITION:
Rattle from sun roof area. This condition is only on vehicles built before VIN GP265214.
CAUSE:
Sun roof latch.
CORRECTION:
Replace old latch with new latch, P/N 20678129.
