Timing Cover: Service and Repair
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Battery ground cable.
2. Drain the cooling system.
3. Tensioner.
4. Generator and lay aside.
5. P/S pump and move aside.
6. Raise vehicle.
7. Inner splash shield.
8. Damper.
9. Lower oil pan.
10. Lower cover bolts.
11. Lower vehicle.
12. Radiator hose at the water pump.
13. Heater coolant hose at cooling system fill pipe.
14. Bypass and overflow hoses.
15. Canister purge hose.
16. Upper Timing Cover bolts.
17. Timing Cover.
INSPECT
^ Sealing surfaces on the Timing Cover and cylinder block.
^ Sealing surfaces with degreaser.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. New gasket making sure ot to damage sealing surfaces.
2. Apply 1052080 sealer or equivalent to sealing surface of Timing Cover.
3. Place Timing Cover on the engine, install upper cover bolts.
4. Raise vehicle.
5. Oil pan.
Tighten
^ M6X1.0 Bolts to 8-12 Nm (6-9 ft. lb.)
^ M8X1.25 Bolt to 20-30 Nm (15-22 ft. lb.)
6. Lower cover bolts.
Tighten
^ M8X1.25 Bolts to 18-36 Nm (13-26 ft. lb.)
^ M10X1.5 Bolts to 27-48 Nm (27-48 ft. lb.)
7. Crankshaft damper as previously outlined.
Tighten
^ Bolt to 90-115 Nm (66-85 ft. lb.)
8. Flywheel cover on transaxle.
Tighten
^ Bolts to 12 Nm (107 in. lb.)
9. Inner splash shield.
10. Lower vehicle.
11. Radiator hose at water pump.
12. Heater hose at cooling system fill pipe.
13. Bypass and overflow hoses.
14. Canister purge hose.
15. P/S pump.
Tighten
^ Bolts to 34-41 Nm (25-30 ft. lb.)
^ Nuts to 50-56 Nm (36-41)
16. Generator and reconnect electrical wires.
Tighten
^ Bracket Bolts to 40-54 Nm (30-40 ft. lb.)
^ Generator bolts to 27-34 Nm (20-25 ft. lb.)
17. Serpentine belt.
18. Fill cooling system.
19. Battery ground cable and start engine.
20. Run engine until upper radiator hose becomes hot (thermostat open).
21. Check coolant level and add as necessary.
22. Install cooling system pressure cap, making sure arrows on cap line up with overflow tube.
INSPECT
^ Coolant level.
^ Leaks.
