Parking Brake System: Adjustments

1987
1. Apply service brake pedal three times with a force of approximately 175 lbs.
2. Apply and release parking brake three times.
3. Raise and support vehicle.
4. Mark relationship between wheel and axle flange.
5. Ensure parking brake lever is fully released, then turn ignition switch on and note brake warning lamp. If warning lamp is lit, pull down on front parking brake cable to remove slack from pedal.
6. Remove rear wheel and tire assemblies. Retain rotors with two lug nuts.
7. Ensure parking brake levers on both calipers are in contact with lever stops on caliper housings. If not, check for binding in rear cables and/or loosen cables as necessary.
8. Tighten parking brake cable at adjuster until either lever begins to move off stop, then loosen until lever moves back and contacts stop.
9. Operate parking brake lever several times and ensure proper operation. When properly adjusted, the lever should not travel more than eight clicks and the rear wheels should not rotate forward when lever is applied five to eight clicks.
