Subject: NEW TCC SOLENOID; ENGINE STALLS WHILE SHIFTING INTO REVERSE OR DRIVE

1981-87 MODELS EQUIPPED WITH THM 125C AND GAS ENGINES AND 1982-85 MODELS EQUIPPED WITH THM 125C AND 4.3L DIESEL ENGINES
"This bulletin supersedes bulletin 87-7-23B, dated 12/87. This bulletin is being revised to include 1982-85 models with the 4.3L Diesel Engine and the Solenoid and Conduit Assembly Part numbers for models equipped with the 4.3L engine."

FIGURE 1 - NEW DESIGN SOLENOID:

BULLETIN COVERS: (Figure 1)

A new torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid, which has an internal rubber seal that will prevent sediment from sticking to the electromagnetic portion of the solenoid, is in production in all 1987 THM 125C models built after Julian date 160. The new solenoid will reduce the potential of TCC Solenoid sticking and the resulting condition of the engine stalling while shifting into reverse or drive.

FIGURE 2 - THM 125/125C TRANSAXLE IDENTIFICATION INFORMATION:

DATE OF PRODUCTION CHANGE: (Figure 2)

Beginning June 9, 1987 (Julian date 160) all 1987 THM 125C Transaxles were produced with the new solenoid.
IMPORTANT:

Some vehicles equipped with THM 125C transaxles built between February 15th and February 25th, 1987 (Julian dates 049 - 056) may have suspect Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoids. The suspect previously equipped solenoids, may stay applied after transaxle has been operated at normal operating temperatures. This condition could result in engine stall while engaging reverse or drive range.

FIGURE 3 - REMOVING SOLENOID:

SERVICE ACTION: (Figure 3)

The new Solenoid can be used to service all past THM 125C Transaxle models. Remove the side cover and replace the solenoid and conduit assembly (On Car service).
SERVICE PARTS INFORMATION:

8665016 Solenoid and Conduit Assembly - 1988 KDC Model Only
8652379 Solenoid and Conduit Assembly - All models equipped with TCC

Cars equipped with the 4.3L diesel engine should use the following parts:

8652377 Solenoid and Conduit Assembly - 1982 through 1984 Models
8652376 Solenoid and Conduit Assembly - 1985 Models

SERVICE NOTES:

To properly diagnose the condition of the suspect Transaxles, assure that stabilized operating temperatures are obtained during normal road evaluation phase of routine preliminary pre-delivery procedure.
