The service Procedure for removing and replacing rear compartment torque rods on 1984-88 Fieros has been revised from what is shown in section 7 (Body Portion) of the Service Manual..
The following service procedure is the revised version and should be used as reference when torque rod removal is necessary.

Procedure
Remove or disconnect (Figure 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
1. Deck lid (6)
2. Motor compartment side quarter grille panel (not shown)
3. Screw (2), use tool J-35808 or equivalent
4. Hinge (4)
5. Loosen heat shield, air conditioning hose and bracket, if present.
6. Pin (9) with end of torque rod resting against plywood, grasp U end of rod (8) and pull rearward to release pin.
7. Torque rod from hook (8)
8. Torque rod (3)
Install or Connect
1. Torque rod (3)
2. Torque rod to hook
3. Pin ( 9 )
^ With torque rod resting against plywood, grasp U end of rod
(8) and pull rearward to insert pin.
^ Release U end (8) of rod making sure that end of rod hooks are over pin.
4. Air conditioning hose and bracket, heat shield
5. Hinge (4)
6. Screw (2)
7. Motor compartment side quarter grille panel
8. Deck lid (6)
