4-121 ENGINE
Cylinder head bolts should only be loosened when engine is cold. Do not reuse cylinder head bolts.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove air cleaner on models equipped with non-turbocharged engines or induction tube on models equipped with turbocharged engines.
3. Remove generator and bracket from carrier, then the ignition coil.
4. Remove distributor assembly.
5. Remove cables from intake manifold bracket, TBI or throttle body.
6. Remove downshift cable, then the ECM electrical connectors from TBI or throttle body and intake manifold.
7. Remove vacuum brake hose, then the fuel inlet and return lines. Relieve fuel pressure before removing fuel lines on models equipped with turbocharged engine.
8. Remove coolant and heater hoses.
9. Remove exhaust pipe at manifold on models equipped with non-turbocharged engine or exhaust manifold to turbo connection on models equipped with turbocharged engine.
10. Remove oxygen sensor and thermostat housing electrical connector, if equipped.
11. Remove engine harness, then the timing belt.
12. With engine cold, loosen cam carrier/cylinder head attaching bolts as shown in Fig. 6.
13. Remove camshaft carrier, rocker arms and valve lash compensators.
14. Remove cylinder head with intake manifold and exhaust manifold as an assembly.
15. Reverse procedure to install. Torque cylinder head bolts a little at a time in sequence shown in Fig. 7 to 18 ft. lbs. Tighten each bolt in the proper sequence an additional 180° in 60° increments.
16. After installation is completed (with the exception of brackets that install onto carrier), start engine and let engine idle until thermostat opens. Turn engine off and torque all bolts an additional 30 to 50° in the proper sequence.
