Shift Rail Detent/Clutch & Differential Housing

Refer to Figs. 3 and 29 for shift rail detent/clutch and differential housing components.

1. Position shift rails so 5th gear shift rail (197) is approximately 1/4 inch below the other three shift rails, which also must be the same height (N position).
2. Install reverse bushing (167).
3. Assemble interlockpins (168) and springs (170) into bores in detent holder (169). Retain using petroleum jelly.
4. Install detent holder and spring assembly (169) with detent ball (171) for the reverse shift rail (183), Fig. 29.
5. Install detent balls (171) using a screwdriver (view B).
6. Install the detent balls for the shift rails in the following order:
a. 1st-2nd shift rail (190).
b. 3rd-4th shift rail (184).
c. 5th gear shift rail (197).
7. Position holder (169), using a pry bar to align bolt holes with threads.
8. Install attaching bolts (175). Ensure shift rails are in the correct detent position, then torque attaching bolts to 7 ft. lbs.
9. Install protective cover (174). Tap until seated in bore.
10. Install bearing (22). Apply high temperature grease to inside bore.
