Removal and Replacement

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove air cleaner together with right and left engine vent covers.

2. Disconnect throttle valve cable at transaxle and carburetor and the shift cable at transmission bracket.

3. Disconnect electrical connectors at neutral start switch, transaxle converter clutch and speedometer pick-up.

4. Disconnect wire harness at transaxle to engine retaining bolts.

5. Remove transaxle cooler line support bracket and the five transaxle to engine retaining bolts.

6. Remove shift cable bracket and neutral start switch harness.

7. Install engine fixture tool J-28467-A or equivalent, then raise vehicle and support with suitable jack stands.

8. Remove rear wheels.

9. If drive axle has gray boots, install boot protectors J-33162 or equivalent.

10. Remove fixed adjusting link/lateral control arm through bolts.

11. Disconnect trailing arms at knuckles.

CAUTION: On vehicles equipped with Tri-Pot joints, care must be exercised not to allow Tri-Pot joints to become overextended. When either or both ends of the shaft are disconnected, overextending the joints may result in separation of internal components, which may cause failure Of the joint. Therefore, the drive axle should be handled in a manner that prevents overextension.

12. Remove rear axle shafts from transaxle and support shafts.

13. Remove splash shields, then disconnect brake cables at calipers and the brake control cable at frame.

14. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold.

15. Remove two engine mounts to cradle nuts and the two transaxle mounts to cradle nuts.

16. Remove two front and two rear cradle retaining bolts, then remove cradle.

17. Remove starter to flexplate shield and the flexplate attaching bolts.

18. Disconnect and plug cooler lines.

19. Support transmission with suitable jack, then remove right rear support bracket

20. Remove remaining transaxle to engine attaching bolts and disconnect ground wire.

21. Remove transaxle from vehicle.

22. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

a. Torque trailing arm at knuckle to 44 ft lbs., then tighten an additional 90°.

b. Torque fixed adjusting link/lateral control arm through bolt to 37 ft lbs, then tighten an additional 90°.
