Brake Pads and Proportioning Valves Replace

NOTICE: Since proportioning valves are adjusted in pairs to the control range, they must be replaced in pairs.

Remove Proportioning Valves:

1. Cover left fender to protect paint from possible brake fluid contamination.

2. Place rags on transaxle below proportioning valves.

3. Unclip brake proportioning valve lines from brake pipe clip.

NOTICE: Have new proportioning valves located near work area to avoid leaving break lines open longer than required.

4. Unscrew brake line from each brake proportioning valve.
5. Unscrew and remove both brake proportioning valves from tandom master cylinder.

FIGURE 1:

Install Proportioning Valves:

Before installing valves, insure that both valves are stamped as shown in Figure 1.

1. Screw both brake proportioning valves on to brake lines.

FIGURE 2:

2. Screw both valves into tandom master cylinder and torque to 40 N-M 30 lb. ft. See Figure 2.

3. Torque both union nuts on brake lines at brake proportioning valves to 11 N-M 9 lb. ft. See Figure 2.
4. Snap brake lines into brake pipe clip.

5. To avoid having to bleed the brakes twice continue with the instructions for brake pad removal.

Remove Brake Pads:

1. Raise vehicle.
2. Mark position of front wheels relative to wheel hubs and remove wheels.

IMPORTANT: Caliper removal is not required to replace shoe and lining assembly.

FIGURE 3:

3. Drive out brake pad retaining pins from inside out using a 1/4" x 3-1/2" drift similar to a Mayhew #8 drift (see Figure 3).

CAUTION: Expanding springs are held under tension by retaining pins. Exercise caution when removing retaining pins.
4. Bottom piston into caliper bore with large pliers to provide clearance between lining and rotor.

5. Remove brake pads from caliper assembly.

Install Brake Pads:

NOTICE: Right and left side outer pads are the same part number. Inner pads, right and left, are specific part numbers.

1. Install brake pads in caliper assembly using new retaining pins and clips.

2. Insure correct seating of retaining pins and expanding springs. See Figures 3 and 4.
3. Install wheels aligning previous marks.

4. Lower vehicle.

5. Bleed brake system and check for leaks.
