Subject: AIR CONDITIONING DOES NOT COOL - COMPRESSOR CLUTCH INOPERATIVE

Models

Affected: 1988 LeMANS - WITH AIR CONDITIONING
Some vehicles may experience a "no cooling" condition of passenger compartment air with the air conditioning controls set in the "cool" mode.

On vehicles prior to VIN serial number JB313423 this condition may be caused by the compressor clutch not operating.

Failure of the compressor clutch operation may be caused by a fracture in either of the two (2) wires at the compressor clutch switch connector. It is possible that the fracture will be internal to the insulation that protects the wire and will not be immediately visible. The most probable location of the fracture is in the black wire at its point of entry to the 2-wire connector at the compressor clutch switch.

Repair Procedure:

1.. Disconnect 2-wire connector from compressor clutch switch.

2. Locate and repair fractured wire following service manual procedures.

3. Reroute compressor wiring harness using the following steps:

4. At left hand side of compressor (end of compressor nearest center of car) remove bolt "A" (Figure 1A) and loosen bolts (2) "B" in order to move guard plate sufficiently to reroute harness above bolt "A" as shown in Figure 1B.

5. Reinstall bolt "A" and retighten bolts (2) "B". Attach the harness to the compressor pipe by use of plastic "tie strap" Figure 1B. Ensure that the wiring harness does not contact the guard plate.

6. Reconnect compressor switch connector ensuring that there is sufficient slack in the harness to make a loop at the connector as shown in Figure 2. This is to prevent tension being applied to the wiring to the compressor due to engine movement.

FIG. 3:

7. If it is not possible to obtain sufficient slack in the wiring to make a loop at the compressor, then the wiring harness should be pulled across the front of the car - taking up available slack - as shown in Figure 3. Relocate the harness in this position using existing harness ties.
