Oil Pressure Test Procedure

Tools Required:

J 21867 Oil Pressure Gage J 36648 Oil Pressure Gage Adapter

IMPORTANT

* Prior to testing engine oil pressure, the following conditions must be met:

- Oil must be at the "FULL" mark on the oil level indicator.

- If the oil is discolored or deteriorated it must be changed. Refer to Maintenance and Lubrication (Section 0B) in the 1991 Pontiac LeMans Service Manual (S9110-T) for oil specifications.

- Any oil leaks must be repaired.

1. Raise and suitably support vehicle. Refer to General Information (Section 0A) in the 1991 Pontiac LeMans Service Manual (S9110-T).

2. Disconnect the electrical connector from the oil pressure switch. The switch is located on the cylinder block near the right drive axle.





3. Remove the oil pressure switch and install in its place a J 36648 oil pressure gage adapter, attached to a J 21867 oil pressure gage (Figure 1).


4. Lower vehicle.

NOTICE: SHUT ENGINE OFF IMMEDIATELY IF NO OIL PRESSURE IS OBSERVED AFTER START UP AS DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE COULD RESULT. REFER TO ENGINE GENERAL INFORMATION (SECTION 6) FOR LOW OIL PRESSURE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES.

5. Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature.

MEASURE:

- Engine oil pressure at idle speed. The standard oil pressure should be between 30 and 150 kPa (4.35 and 21.75 psi). If the oil pressure is below 30 kPa (4.35 psi), refer to Engine General Information (Section 6) of the 1991 Pontiac LeMans Service Manual (S-9110-T) for low oil pressure diagnostic procedures.

6. Turn engine off.

7. Raise and suitably support vehicle. Refer to General Information (Section 0A) in the 1991 Pontiac LeMans Service Manual (S9110-T).


8. Remove the J 36648 oil pressure gage adapter and the J 21867 pressure gage from the cylinder block.

9. Install the oil pressure switch.

TIGHTEN:

* Oil pressure switch to 30 N-m (22 lbs.ft.).

10. Install oil pressure switch electrical connector.

11. Lower vehicle.
