Timing Cover: Service and Repair
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable
2. Drain the cooling system.
3. Tensioner and serpentine belt
4. Generator and disconnect electrical wires
5. Power steering pump and support aside
6. Raise vehicle.
7. Inner splash shield
8. Flywheel cover at transaxle
9. Starter
10. Balancer with J 24420-B
11. Serpentine belt idler pulley
12. Oil pan
13. Lower cover bolts
14. Lower vehicle.
15. Radiator hose at the water pump
16. Heater coolant hose at cooling system fill pipe
17. Bypass and overflow hoses
18. Canister purge hose
19. Upper Timing Cover bolts
20. Timing Cover
CLEAN
^ Mating surfaces of the Timing Cover and cylinder block
^ Sealing surfaces with degreaser
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. New gasket
^ Make sure not to damage sealing surfaces.
2. Apply sealer (p/n 1052080 or equivalent) to sealing surface of Timing Cover.
3. Place Timing Cover on the engine; install upper cover bolts.
4. Raise vehicle.
5. Oil pan
Tighten
^ M6X1.0 Bolts to 8-12 Nm (6-9 ft. lb.)
^ M8X1.25 Bolt to 20-30 Nm (15-22 ft. lb.)
6. Lower cover bolts
Tighten
^ M8X1.25 Bolts to 18-36 Nm (13-26 ft. lb.)
^ M10X1.5 Bolts to 27-48 Nm (27-48 ft. lb.)
7. Serpentine belt idler pulley
8. Balancer
9. Starter
Tighten
^ Bolts to 36-50 Nm (26-37 ft. lb.)
10. Flywheel cover on transaxle.
Tighten
^ Bolts to 12 Nm (107 in. lb.)
11. Inner splash shield
12. Lower vehicle.
13. Radiator hose at water pump
14. Heater hose at cooling system fill pipe
15. Bypass and overflow hoses
16. Canister purge hose
17. Power steering pump
Tighten
^ Bolts to 34-41 Nm (25-30 ft. lb.)
^ Nuts to 50-56 Nm (36-41)
18. Generator and generator electrical connections
Tighten
^ Bracket Bolts to 40-54 Nm (30-40 ft. lb.)
^ Generator bolts to 27-34 Nm (20-25 ft. lb.)
19. Serpentine belt and tensioner
20. Fill cooling system.
21. Negative battery cable
