Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

Fig. 7 Cylinder Head Tightening Sequence:

1. Disable airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
2. Relieve fuel pressure as outlined under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELIEF.
3. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove intake and exhaust manifolds as described previously.
4. To remove left (front) valve cover, proceed as follows:
a. Disconnect C3I and spark plug wires.
b. Remove alternator bracket.
c. Remove A/C compressor bracket bolt.
5. To remove right (rear) valve cover, proceed as follows:
a. Remove power steering pump.
b. Remove belt tensioner assembly.
c. Remove fuel line heat shield.
6. Remove rocker arm assemblies, guide plate and pushrods.
7. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts, then remove.
8. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Clean all gasket mating surfaces and cylinder head bolt holes in block.
b. Clean threads in block with appropriate tap.
c. Apply suitable sealant to bolt threads.
d. Torque cylinder head bolts to 35 ft. lbs. in sequence, Fig. 7.
e. Tighten each bolt an additional 130° in sequence.
f. Tighten each bolt an additional 30° in sequence.
g. Rearm airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
