Removal and Installation

Note: It may be necessary to remove the catalytic converter and its support bracket to facilitate transmission removal.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, remove shifter boot retaining screws and slide boot up lever.
2. Remove shift lever retaining bolts and lever, then raise and support vehicle.
3. Remove torque arm and propeller shaft, and on 1983 models disconnect clutch cable.
4. Disconnect speedometer cable and electrical connectors from transmission.
5. Support transmission and remove transmission mount retaining bolts and catalytic converter bracket.
6. Remove crossmember retaining bolts, crossmember and bolts securing flywheel cover.
7. Remove bolts securing transmission to engine, transmission and flywheel cover.
8. Reverse procedure to install.
