- With Standard Column

Wheels of vehicle must be in straight ahead position, key must be in ``lock'' position and battery ground cable must be disconnected.

SHAFT LOCK, TURN SIGNAL CANCELLING CAM, UPPER BEARING SPRING, TURN SIGNAL SWITCH, BUZZER SWITCH & CYLINDER LOCK SET

Disassembly

1. Remove horn pad and disconnect electrical connectors, then remove retainer and jam nut, Fig. 80.
2. Remove steering wheel and cover.
3. Depress shaft lock with a suitable tool, then remove shaft lock retaining ring and shaft lock.
4. Remove turn signal cancelling cam, then the upper bearing spring.
5. Place turn signal in ``right turn'' position, then remove screw and crossover arm.
6. Remove turn signal lever.
7. Remove turn signal switch attaching screws and the switch, positioning out of way. If it is necessary to remove switch, remove wire harness protector and gently pull wire harness through column.
8. Remove key from lock cylinder set and remove buzzer switch and clip, then reinsert key.
9. Remove lock retaining screw and the lock cylinder set.

Assembly
1. Install lock cylinder set, then the lock retaining screw.
2. Place key in ``run'' position, then install clip and buzzer switch.
3. Install turn signal switch and attaching screws.
4. Lubricate crossover arm with lithium grease, then install arm and attaching screw.
5. Install upper bearing spring and turn signal cancelling cam, then the shaft lock.
6. Depress shaft lock with a suitable tool and install shaft lock retaining ring, then the cover.
7. Install steering wheel, then the jam nut and retainer.
8. Install turn signal lever and wire harness protector.
9. Install horn pad and attaching screws.

DIMMER SWITCH, IGNITION SWITCH, LOCK HOUSING, COVER SHROUD, KEY RELEASE LEVER, SWITCH ACTUATOR RACK, SWITCH ACTUATOR SEGMENT, LOCK BOLT, PIVOT & SWITCH ASSEMBLY & UPPER BEARING

Disassembly
1. Perform Disassemble of Shaft Lock, Turn Signal Cancelling Cam, Upper Bearing Spring, Turn Signal Switch, Buzzer Switch & Cylinder Lock Set as previously described.
2. Remove thrust washer and steering column housing mounting screws, then the ignition and dimmer switch mounting bolts.
3. Remove dimmer switch and dimmer switch rod, then the ignition switch mounting stud and ignition switch.
4. Remove lock housing cover and shroud assembly, then the shroud attaching screws.
5. Remove shroud from lock housing cover.
6. Remove upper bearing retainer and wave washer, then the key release lever and key release spring.
7. Remove switch actuator rod and rack assembly, then the lock bolt.
8. Remove switch actuator pivot pin, then the pivot and switch assembly.
9. Remove bearing retaining bushing and switch actuator segment, then the upper bearing.

Assembly
1. Install upper bearing, then the switch actuator segment and bearing retaining bushing.
2. Install pivot and switch assembly, then the switch actuator pivot pin.
3. Install lock bolt, then the switch actuator rod and rack assembly.
4. Install key release spring and key release lever, then the wave washer and upper bearing retainer.
5. Attach shroud to lock housing cover and install retaining screws.
6. Attach lock housing cover and shroud assembly to column and install attaching screws.

7. Install ignition switch and mounting stud, then adjust ignition switch, Fig. 81.
8. Install dimmer switch rod, dimmer switch and hex nut, then adjust dimmer switch, Fig. 82.
9. Install thrust washer.
10. Perform Assembly steps of Shaft Lock, Turn Signal Cancelling Cam, Upper Bearing Spring, Turn Signal Switch, Buzzer Switch & Cylinder Lock Set as previously described.

SHAFT & LOWER BEARING ASSEMBLY

Disassembly
1. Remove horn pad and disconnect electrical connectors, then remove retainer and jam nut.
2. Remove steering wheel and cover.
3. Remove steering column from vehicle as previously described.
4. Remove lower bearing adapter clip, then the retainer and bearing adapter.
5. Remove bearing assembly and lower bearing assembly, then the cover.
6. Depress shaft lock with a suitable tool, then remove shaft lock retaining ring.
7. Remove shaft lock, turn signal cancelling cam and upper bearing spring, then the shaft.

Assembly
1. Install shaft, then the upper bearing spring, turn signal cancelling cam and shaft lock.
2. Depress shaft lock with a suitable tool and install shaft lock retaining ring.
3. Install cover, then the lower bearing adapter.
4. Install lower bearing assembly, then the lower bearing adapter retainer and clip.
5. Install steering column.
6. Install steering wheel, then the jam nut and retainer.
7. Install turn signal lever and wire harness protector.
8. Install horn pad and attaching screws.

FIXED COLUMN, VEHICLES w/AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
SHAFT LOCK, TURN SIGNAL CANCELLING CAM, UPPER BEARING SPRING, SHAFT ASSEMBLY & LOWER BEARING ASSEMBLY


Disassembly

1. Remove horn pad and disconnect electrical connectors, then remove retainer and jam nut, Fig. 83.
2. Remove steering wheel.
3. If removing and/or repairing shaft assembly and/or lower bearing assembly, remove steering column from vehicle.
4. Using a suitable tool, depress shaft lock, then remove shaft lock retaining ring.
5. Remove shaft lock and cover, then the turn signal cancelling cam.
6. Remove upper bearing spring, then the shaft.
7. Remove lower bearing adapter clip and bearing adapter retainer, then the bearing assembly and lower bearing adapter.

Assembly
1. Install lower bearing adapter and bearing assembly, then the bearing adapter retainer and lower bearing adapter clip.
2. Install shaft assembly to column, then install bearing spring.
3. Install turn signal cancelling cam, then the shaft lock and cover.
4. Depress shaft lock and install shaft lock retaining ring.
5. Install steering column in vehicle, then install steering wheel, jam nut, retainer and horn pad.

DIMMER SWITCH, IGNITION SWITCH & DIMMER SWITCH ROD

Disassembly
1. Remove dimmer switch hex nut and ignition switch mounting bolt.
2. Remove dimmer switch and dimmer switch rod.
3. Remove ignition switch mounting stud and ignition switch.

1. Place key in ``lock'' position.
2. Install ignition switch and mounting stud, then adjust ignition switch, Fig. 84.
3. Install dimmer switch rod and dimmer switch, then adjust dimmer switch, Fig. 83.
4. Install hex nut and mounting bolt.

TURN SIGNAL SWITCH, BUZZER SWITCH & CYLINDER LOCK SET

Disassembly
1. Perform steps 1 through 5 of Disassembly for Shaft Lock, Turn Signal Cancelling Cam, Upper Bearing Spring, Shaft Assembly & Lower Bearing Assembly.
2. Remove upper bearing spring.
3. Place turn signal in ``right turn'' position, then remove hazard knob.
4. Remove signal switch arm attaching screw and the arm.
5. Remove turn signal switch attaching screws and position switch out of way. If it is necessary to remove switch, remove clip and wire harness protector, then gently pull wire harness through column.
6. Remove key from lock cylinder and remove buzzer switch and clip, then the lock retaining bolt.
7. Reinsert key in lock cylinder, then remove lock cylinder set.

Assembly
1. Install lock cylinder set, then place key in ``run'' position and install lock retaining bolt.
2. Install clip and buzzer switch, then the turn signal switch and attaching screws.
3. Install signal switch arm and attaching screw, then the hazard knob.
4. Install upper bearing spring.
5. Perform steps 3 through 5 of Assembly for Shaft Lock, Turn Signal Cancelling Cam, Upper bearing Spring, Shaft Assembly & Lower Bearing Assembly.

LOCK HOUSING COVER, SHROUD, UPPER BEARING, ACTUATOR ROD/RACK ASSEMBLY, LOCK BOLT & PIVOT & SWITCH ASSEMBLY

Disassembly
1. Perform steps 1 through 5 of Disassembly for Shaft Lock, Turn Signal Cancelling Cam, Upper Bearing Spring, Shaft Assembly & Lower Bearing Assembly, then remove upper bearing spring.
2. Perform Disassembly steps for Dimmer Switch, Ignition Switch & Dimmer Switch Rod and Turn Signal Switch, Buzzer Switch & Cylinder Lock Set.
3. Remove attaching screws, then the shroud bowl assembly and lock housing cover.
4. Remove attaching screws, then the lock housing cover and bowl.
5. Remove upper bearing retainer, then the actuator rod assembly and lock bolt.
6. Disconnect horn circuit contact and remove bearing retaining bushing.
7. Remove thrust washer and upper bearing, then the switch actuator pivot pin.
8. Remove pivot and switch assembly, then the actuator selector.

Assembly
1. Connect horn circuit contact and install bearing retaining bushing to lock housing cover.
2. Install pivot and switch assembly to lock housing cover, then install switch actuator pivot pin and the actuator selector.
3. Install lock bolts and actuator rod/rack assembly, then the upper bearing retainer.
4. Install bowl to lock housing cover, then the attaching screws.
5. Install cover assembly to column, then the attaching screws. Tighten screw in 12 o'clock position first, screw in 8 o'clock position second and screw in 4 o'clock position third, then torque screws, in same order, to 89 lb in
6. Perform Assembly steps for Turn Signal Switch, Buzzer Switch & Cylinder Lock Set, then for Dimmer Switch, Ignition Switch & Dimmer Switch Rod.
