Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

Cylinder Head & Camshaft Carrier Bolt Tightening Sequence:






Cylinder head bolts should only be loosened when engine is cold. Do not reuse cylinder head bolts.
1. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURE/RELIEVING FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Remove air cleaner on models equipped with non-turbocharged engines or induction tube on models equipped with turbocharged engines.
4. Remove alternator and bracket from carrier, then the ignition coil.
5. Remove distributor assembly.
6. Remove cables from intake manifold bracket, TBI or throttle body.
7. Remove downshift cable, then the ECM electrical connectors from TBI or throttle body and intake manifold.
8. Remove vacuum brake hose, then the fuel inlet and return lines. Place shop towel over fuel line and fitting when disconnecting.
9. Remove coolant and heater hoses.
10. Remove exhaust pipe at manifold on models equipped with non-turbocharged engine or exhaust manifold to turbo connection on models equipped with turbocharged engine.
11. Remove oxygen sensor and thermostat housing electrical connector, if equipped.
12. Remove engine harness, then the timing belt.
13. With engine cold, loosen cam carrier/cylinder head attaching bolts as shown in Fig. 6.
14. Remove camshaft carrier, rocker arms and valve lash compensators.
15. Remove cylinder head with intake manifold and exhaust manifold as an assembly.
16. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten cylinder head bolts to specifications, using sequence shown in Fig. 7
