Engine: Service and Repair
Disassembled View Of Engine:
1. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURE/RELIEVING FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE
2. Disconnect battery cables and engine ground wire, then drain cooling system.
3. Remove battery and battery tray.
4. Remove air cleaner.
5. Disconnect engine electrical harness connectors at bulkhead, brake cylinder, wiper motor, cooling fan, relays and grounds.
6. On all models, disconnect throttle cable from bracket and throttle body assembly.
7. Disconnect vacuum hoses from throttle body assembly, then disconnect power steering high pressure hose at cut-off switch.
8. Disconnect vacuum hoses at map sensor and canister, then disconnect air conditioning relay cluster switches.
9. Disconnect power steering return hose at power steering pump.
10. Disconnect ECM electrical connectors, then pull harness through bulkhead and position harness over engine.
11. Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses from engine, then disconnect wire connector at temperature switch on thermostat housing.
12. Disconnect transmission shift cable at transmission, then raise and support vehicle.
13. Disconnect vehicle speed sensor electrical connector.
14. Disconnect exhaust pipe at exhaust manifold and remove exhaust pipe from converter.
15. Remove heater hoses from heater core, fuel lines at flex hoses and transmission cooler lines at flex hoses. Place shop towel over fuel line and fitting when disconnecting.
16. Remove front wheels, right hand spoiler section and splash shield.
17. Remove and support right and left brake calipers.
18. Discharge A/C system, disconnect electrical connectors at A/C compressor, then remove A/C compressor and mounting brackets. Using a piece of wire, support compressor in wheel opening.
19. Remove center front suspension support attachment bolts, then remove one bolt at each end, then loosen remaining bolt.
20. On automatic transaxle vehicles, remove rear transaxle lateral strut.
21. On all models, remove front transaxle strut.
22. Lower vehicle and support front end by placing jack stands under core support.
23. Using a suitable hoist, position front post of hoist to rear of cowl.
24. Using a suitable piece of wood (4 inch x 4 inch x 6 ft.), position onto front post of hoist.
25. Raise vehicle slightly and remove jack stands from front end.
26. Position a suitable dolly under engine and transaxle assembly.
27. Position three pieces of wood (4 inch x 4 inch x 12 inch) under engine and transaxle assembly only.
28. Slightly lower vehicle onto dolly and remove right and left front suspension support remaining bolts.
29. Remove transaxle mount to bracket attaching bolt.
30. Remove front and rear engine mount to bracket attaching bolts.
31. Remove right and left steering knuckle to strut attaching bolts.
32. Remove engine and transaxle as an assembly.
33. Position engine and transaxle assembly into vehicle.
34. Loosely install transaxle and left front mounts to side rail bolts.
35. Install right rear mount to body bolts.
36. Position a suitable jack under control arms and raise struts into position, then install retaining nuts.
37. Reverse procedure to complete installation. Tighten all nuts, bolts and screws to specifications.
